Medical Aid in Dying

The Medical Aid in Dying Committee fights for passage of New York State’s Medical Aid in Dying Act in various ways. We work with Compassion and Choices, a national nonprofit now in its ninth year campaigning for the New York law.

2023 Annual Report

The AVfC MAID Committee joined other state organizations in sending a Memorandum of Support to all New York State legislators.

MAID committee members sent emails, wrote LTE’s and made phone calls to NYS lawmakers.

MAID committee members visited Billy Jones, our Assemblyman, to urge that, in addition to pledging to vote for MAID, he sign on as a co-sponsor.

MAID committee members lobbied in Albany with a large group of New Yorkers in April 2023. Our delegation participated in a march, press conference and visits to individual legislators and/or their staff.

Nancy Murphy, chair of the MAID committee, testified in 24 Zoom meetings with legislators and/or their staff, telling the story of her sister’s peaceful death using the Vermont law.

In January 2024 a group traveled to Albany again to participate in a press conference and visit individual legislators. Another lobbying trip will occur in February.

April 24 is Lobby Day in Albany for passage of New York’s Medical Aid in Dying Act THIS YEAR! Activities organized by Compassion and Choices will consist of an orientation, a press conference, a rally, and meetings with individual lawmakers.
